Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol Unveil Historic DDLJ Statue in Leicester Square: Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol unveiled a bronze statue in London’s Leicester Square on Thursday, December 4, celebrating their iconic roles in the cult classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). With this tribute, the legendary duo now joins beloved characters from film history including Mary Poppins, Paddington, Gene Kelly, and Harry Potter.

A Bollywood Milestone in the Heart of London

Leicester Square, home to London’s biggest cinematic attractions, now proudly features Raj and Simran as part of the Scenes in the Square trail. The installation—led by Discover Leicester Square—recognizes the film’s cultural impact and reflects its devoted global fanbase.

DDLJ’s Legendary Journey

Often described as “Bollywood’s Romeo and Juliet,” DDLJ follows Raj and Simran, two young non-resident Indians who fall in love during a European adventure that begins on a train from King’s Cross station. Remarkably, the film even features Leicester Square in a pivotal scene where the pair unknowingly cross paths.

Since its 1995 release, DDLJ has grossed over $32 million worldwide and remains the longest-running film in Hindi cinema history. Its legacy has expanded far beyond India. Earlier this year, Manchester hosted Come Fall In Love – The DDLJ Musical, reaffirming the film’s enduring appeal in the UK.

Superstars React to the Tribute

Speaking at the unveiling, Shah Rukh Khan shared his gratitude with fans worldwide, saying,
“It is so exciting to see our statue unveiled today in London, a special place where our DDLJ story began all those 30 years ago… attending the ceremony today has given me a moment I will never forget!”

Kajol expressed a similar sentiment, stating,
“I never thought Simran and Raj would be sharing space with Harry Potter and Mary Poppins… it’s such a lovely tribute to a film that has been part of my life for three decades.”

Celebrating Cinema Across Cultures

Ros Morgan, Chief Executive at Heart of London Business Alliance, hailed the occasion, emphasizing that the statue strengthens London’s ties with Indian cinema:
“This tribute honours a story whose magic continues to captivate audiences worldwide… and this statue will draw fans back to the home of film and entertainment for years to come.”

Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, echoed the sentiment, adding,
“DDLJ redefined Indian cinema 30 years ago… it is fitting that it is recognised alongside Hollywood icons. On behalf of Yash Raj Films, it is an honour to be the first statue dedicated to Indian cinema in such an iconic location.”

A Tribute That Transcends Borders

With over 140 million followers, Shah Rukh Khan remains one of the most globally influential actors, even surpassing Hollywood’s Tom Cruise in wealth and reach. DDLJ’s 30th anniversary marks not just a milestone for Indian cinema but a moment of shared cultural celebration between India and the UK.

Ultimately, the Leicester Square unveiling reflects how cinema—beyond borders, languages, and decades—continues to connect hearts across the world.
