Musinsa and SM Entertainment Join Forces to Create New Era of K-Pop Fan Marketing: Fashion commerce platform Musinsa and entertainment company SM Entertainment have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop a new business model connecting K-pop artist intellectual property (IP), fashion, advertising, marketing and the global fan economy.

The agreement, signed on September 14 at SM Entertainment’s headquarters in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, will enable Musinsa’s partner fashion brands to collaborate with SM artists on products incorporating their IP. Official merchandise from SM artists will also be distributed through the Musinsa platform.

The partnership represents a significant expansion of the companies’ previous marketing relationship and reflects the growing convergence of entertainment, fashion and fan-driven commerce.

From Celebrity Endorsement to Fan-Centred Marketing

The new partnership moves beyond the traditional celebrity endorsement model.

Rather than simply placing an artist in an advertising campaign, the companies plan to develop products, content and experiences around artist IP, allowing fans to interact with their favorite artists through fashion and lifestyle products.

Collaborative products will be sold through Musinsa’s online and offline channels and supported by integrated marketing campaigns.

For advertisers and brands, the model offers multiple opportunities to connect with highly engaged communities through:

  • Artist and celebrity IP
  • Fashion collaborations
  • Official merchandise
  • Pop-up stores
  • Digital content
  • Social media campaigns
  • Experiential marketing
  • Online and offline retail
  • International fan engagement

The approach effectively shifts marketing from advertising to fans toward creating experiences with fans.

K-Pop and K-Fashion Target Global Consumers

International expansion is a central component of the agreement.

Musinsa and SM Entertainment plan to conduct joint marketing campaigns in overseas markets where both companies are expanding their presence.

SM’s artists bring established international fan communities, while Musinsa provides fashion-commerce infrastructure and access to Korean fashion brands.

This combination could give Musinsa partner brands an additional route to global consumers, particularly audiences already engaged with Korean popular culture.

The partnership could also strengthen the global positioning of Korean fashion by connecting designer and fashion brands with the international cultural influence of K-pop.

Building the Fan Economy

The collaboration highlights the increasing importance of the fan economy in modern marketing.

Today’s fans are not simply passive audiences. Highly engaged fan communities can discover products, purchase merchandise, create social media content, share campaigns and become powerful organic promoters.

The Musinsa-SM model brings together three important assets:

SM Entertainment — Artist IP and global fandom

Musinsa — Fashion platform and distribution

K-Fashion Brands — Products and consumer experiences

Together, these assets create a potential marketing journey from:

Artist IP → Content → Fan Engagement → Product Discovery → Purchase → Social Sharing → Brand Advocacy

This integrated approach can provide brands with opportunities to build deeper and longer-lasting relationships with consumers.

Partnership Builds on Previous Campaigns

Musinsa and SM Entertainment have already worked together on promotional campaigns.

During July and August, the companies conducted online and offline marketing initiatives around album releases from Hearts2Hearts and NCT 127, including Lemon Tang and Blingy.

The latest MOU expands those individual campaigns into a broader strategic relationship covering fashion products, merchandise, content, pop-up stores, media and overseas marketing.

SM Entertainment co-CEO Tak Young-jun said the companies would pursue comprehensive collaboration across multiple areas, including pop-up stores, content, albums and media, with the aim of providing new IP experiences to fans in South Korea and around the world.

Musinsa Chief Commerce Officer Choi Jae-young said the combination of SM’s artist IP, Musinsa’s platform and distribution capabilities, and K-fashion brands could create new business opportunities and new forms of content and products for fans.

A New Opportunity for Brands

For the advertising and marketing industry, the partnership demonstrates how intellectual property can become a complete marketing ecosystem.

Traditional advertising often uses celebrity recognition to attract attention. Fan marketing goes further by connecting the celebrity, community, product and experience.

Under the Musinsa-SM model, an artist can become the gateway to a fashion collection, pop-up experience, digital campaign, merchandise line and international brand activation.

The strategy could eventually provide a template for other industries—including sports, film, television, gaming and creator marketing—where powerful communities are built around recognizable IP.
