Major Television Networks Suspend White House Pool Coverage After Trump Bans CNN, MS NOW and Politico: Five major U.S. television networks have suspended their pooled television coverage of President Donald Trump after the White House barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from access to the White House.
ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, Fox News Media and CNN jointly announced Monday that they would not provide replacement coverage for the presidential television pool. The decision came after CNN was removed from its scheduled role as the pool representative.
The White House television pool allows the five networks to rotate responsibility for filming presidential events and distributing the video feed to other news organizations. The system is designed to share the substantial costs and logistical demands of covering the president, including travel and camera operations.
In a joint statement, the five networks said the public has an important interest in receiving accurate and independent information about the government and argued that an administration should not restrict a news organization because of disagreements with its reporting.
The dispute began Friday when Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be barred from the White House. Reporters from the three organizations were subsequently denied entry to the White House complex, and their credentials were revoked.
CNN, MS NOW and Politico responded Monday by filing a federal lawsuit seeking to restore their access. The organizations argue that the administration violated their First Amendment rights and denied their journalists due process. They are seeking expedited court action and the restoration of their White House credentials.
The White House has disputed the characterization of the action as an attack on the free press. Trump said he was targeting what he described as “fake news,” while Vice President JD Vance said the administration was not preventing the organizations from reporting on the White House but was withholding what he characterized as special access.
The suspension of the television pool creates an unusual situation for presidential coverage because CNN is one of the five networks responsible for the rotating pool operation. With no replacement pooler designated, television organizations may have to rely on their own cameras or other available feeds to cover presidential events.
The dispute also affected coverage of Trump’s activities Monday. The Associated Press reported that a White House event marking the inauguration of a newly constructed helipad received little coverage from the major television networks following the suspension of the pool.
The legal challenge has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly, who previously handled CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s 2018 legal challenge over the revocation of his White House press credentials.
The latest confrontation represents another legal and institutional dispute between the Trump administration and news organizations over access to the White House and the government’s authority to determine which journalists receive access. The court proceedings are expected to determine whether the administration’s actions comply with constitutional protections and applicable due-process requirements.
