Trump Bans CNN, MS NOW and Politico From White House as Media Access Dispute Escalates: President Donald Trump has barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from access to the White House, accusing the three news organizations of publishing what he described as “fake news” about his administration. The decision was announced Friday and was followed Saturday by the denial of entry to journalists representing all three outlets.
Trump announced the restrictions in a post on Truth Social, saying the outlets would be banned from the White House “effective immediately.” He accused them of repeatedly reporting what he characterized as false information and indicated that additional media organizations could face similar restrictions.
The president did not identify specific news reports that prompted the decision. During a Friday press conference, however, Trump said he considered the outlets’ coverage unfavorable to his administration and suggested that other major organizations could also face restrictions.
The ban became operational Saturday morning when reporters from the three organizations were turned away from the White House complex.
CNN senior White House reporter Betsy Klein, MS NOW White House reporter Akayla Gardner and Politico White House reporter Cheyenne Haslett were among those denied access. Their White House credentials were reportedly deactivated or confiscated.
MS NOW, formerly known as MSNBC, said it stood behind its journalists and would take steps to defend what it described as its First Amendment rights. The network said the White House belongs to the American people and that decisions made there are funded by taxpayers.
CNN similarly rejected the restriction, saying its journalists have a constitutional right to report on the federal government without government interference. The network said it would continue covering the administration and other public bodies.
Politico Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Greenberger told staff that the organization stood behind Haslett and its other White House reporters and would defend its First Amendment rights.
The White House Correspondents’ Association also objected to the revocation of the reporters’ access. Its president, Fox News reporter Jacqui Heinrich, said the organization was calling for the credentials to be restored and warned that a standard used to exclude one organization because of its coverage could potentially be applied to others.
Today’s action revoking access for journalists from CNN, POLITICO, and MSNOW violates the First Amendment. The implications extend beyond these organizations: a standard used to exclude one news outlet because of its coverage could be applied to any outlet in the future. The American people, through a free and independent press, must be able to scrutinize those elected to power, regardless of whether government officials view it favorably. That’s why courts have repeatedly held that once the White House provides access to journalists, it cannot deny that access arbitrarily or based on the content of their reporting. The dispute has renewed questions about the relationship between the presidency and the White House press corps, as well as the constitutional limits on the government’s ability to restrict journalists’ access because of their coverage.
The current confrontation follows earlier disputes between the Trump administration and news organizations over access to presidential and government facilities. During Trump’s first administration, CNN successfully challenged the temporary removal of correspondent Jim Acosta’s White House press credentials. More recently, the administration restricted access for Associated Press journalists following a dispute over terminology used by the news organization, leading to litigation over press access.
Trump has also previously clashed publicly with numerous news organizations, frequently criticizing outlets whose reporting he considers unfavorable. The latest action, however, involves multiple major organizations simultaneously and has prompted renewed debate over press access and the First Amendment.
Legal questions surrounding the restrictions are likely to become an important part of the dispute. Critics of the administration’s action argue that excluding journalists because of unfavorable coverage raises constitutional concerns, while the administration has maintained that the president has authority over access to the White House complex.
As of Saturday, CNN, MS NOW and Politico had indicated that they intended to continue covering the White House despite the loss of physical access. The organizations’ responses also underscore the broader role of journalists who cover the executive branch, particularly when direct access to government officials and presidential events is restricted.
