IAMAI Launches E-Commerce Council of India to Drive the Future of India’s $120 Billion Digital Commerce Economy: In a major step towards strengthening India’s rapidly expanding digital economy, the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has announced the launch of the E-Commerce Council of India (ECCI), a first-of-its-kind national platform designed to bring together industry leaders, policymakers, technology companies, startups, and other stakeholders to shape the future of digital commerce in the country.

The newly established council aims to create a collaborative ecosystem that supports innovation, encourages evidence-based policymaking, enhances consumer trust, and improves the ease of doing business across India’s digital commerce landscape.

Speaking at the launch, noted economist Dr. Laveesh Bhandari emphasized that the next phase of India’s e-commerce growth will rely as much on collaboration as on technological innovation.
“The industry must come together and speak in a common voice on key policy issues. Such collaboration will enable informed policymaking, greater regulatory certainty, and a business environment that supports sustainable growth while delivering greater value to consumers, sellers, and the broader economy,” he said.
Digital Commerce Beyond Online Shopping
India’s digital commerce sector has evolved well beyond traditional online retail and now serves as a critical pillar of the country’s digital economy. The ecosystem today includes online marketplaces, service platforms, mobility solutions, travel technology, logistics networks, digital payments, direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands, exporters, cross-border commerce, and AI-powered commerce solutions.
Recognizing the increasing complexity and scale of the sector, the ECCI has been established to facilitate structured dialogue between industry and government while encouraging collaborative initiatives that promote innovation and responsible growth.
Industry Leaders Join Hands
The council brings together several of India’s leading digital commerce companies, including Amazon, Flipkart, IndiaMART, ixigo, Uber, Rapido, Shiprocket, eBay, Urban Company, and Meesho, creating a unified platform to address industry challenges and opportunities.
The initiative seeks to represent the diverse interests of marketplaces, retailers, logistics providers, payment companies, technology firms, exporters, MSMEs, startups, academic institutions, and policy experts.
Strategic Focus Areas
The E-Commerce Council of India will work across several priority sectors that are expected to shape the future of India’s digital economy, including:
- Service E-Commerce
- Product E-Commerce
- Cross-Border E-Commerce and Digital Trade
- Logistics, Supply Chains and Fulfilment
- Mobility
- MSME Enablement and Market Access
- Travel Technology
- Consumer Trust, Digital Payments and Responsible Commerce
- Artificial Intelligence, Emerging Technologies and Future Commerce
Building a Globally Competitive Ecosystem
Explaining the vision behind the initiative, Dr. Subho Ray, President of IAMAI, said digital commerce has become one of the defining pillars of India’s economic transformation.
He noted that digital platforms are reshaping how businesses operate, how consumers purchase products and services, and how Indian enterprises compete in domestic and international markets.
According to Dr. Ray, the ECCI will function as a collaborative platform that enables industry stakeholders to engage with policymakers, undertake research, develop industry best practices, and contribute to policy discussions that support innovation while building a trusted and globally competitive digital commerce ecosystem.
Annual Indian E-Commerce Summit Planned
As part of its long-term roadmap, IAMAI also plans to organize the Indian E-Commerce Summit (IECS) as an annual flagship event. The summit will bring together government officials, business leaders, academics, technology innovators, and global digital commerce experts to discuss emerging trends, digital trade, policy frameworks, and the future of commerce.
Strengthening India’s Digital Economy
The launch of the E-Commerce Council of India comes at a time when India’s digital economy continues to witness rapid growth, driven by increasing internet penetration, digital payments, AI adoption, and expanding participation of MSMEs and startups.
By creating a unified platform for collaboration, policy advocacy, and ecosystem development, IAMAI aims to position the ECCI as the premier voice of India’s digital commerce sector and a catalyst for the country’s next phase of digital economic growth.
