Sports x Marketing Synergy Seen as Key to Hong Kong’s Economic Growth: At Elite Marketers’ Alumni cum Leadership Forum “Marketing × Sports” hosted by the Hong Kong Management Association at Kai Tak Sports Park, chairman Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges outlined Hong Kong’s ambition to establish itself as a global hub for major sporting events. The growing intersection of sports and marketing is being seen as a strategic pathway to attract international attention, strengthen community engagement, and stimulate economic activity.

The integration of sports and marketing is emerging as a powerful driver of economic growth for Hong Kong, as industry leaders highlighted the city’s potential to capitalize on its expanding sports economy, reports The Standard.

Marketing is increasingly being viewed as a central force behind innovation and business growth, enabling companies to connect with wider audiences, expand into new markets, and draw investment. When combined with sports, it enhances the commercial value of events while boosting tourism and the city’s global profile.

The forum, themed Marketing x Sports: Partnering to Unlock Business Opportunities in Hong Kong’s Sports Economy, explored ways to maximize the impact of sports-driven initiatives and create sustainable growth opportunities.

Casper Stylsvig, Executive Director in Sports Business at the The Hong Kong Jockey Club, emphasized the broader economic role of sports, highlighting its ability to drive tourism, consumer spending, and community participation. The development of a strong sports ecosystem, including fan engagement, talent development, and long-term economic returns, is seen as essential for sustained success.

Innovative cross-sport collaborations are also gaining traction, with integrated events helping to attract diverse audiences and enhance overall experiences. These initiatives demonstrate the potential of combining different sporting formats to create new commercial and engagement opportunities.

Meanwhile, Bruce Lam Kwok-shing pointed to the growing value chain of the sports industry, extending beyond live events into sectors such as merchandise, hospitality, and entertainment. Major global tournaments, including the upcoming FIFA World Cup, are expected to play a significant role in boosting Hong Kong’s economy.

The expanded format of the tournament, featuring more teams and matches over an extended period, is likely to drive increased consumer activity, particularly across late-night and daytime viewing cycles. This shift is expected to benefit industries such as catering, retail, and entertainment, while contributing to the development of the city’s night-time economy.

As an international city, Hong Kong is being encouraged to leverage the global sports economy to diversify its growth engines, strengthen its tourism appeal, and position itself as a leading destination for world-class sporting events.
