ChatGPT Plans Limited Advertising to Keep AI Affordable: Artificial intelligence is fast approaching a stage where every individual can rely on a personal digital assistant to learn, create, and solve complex problems. As this transformation accelerates, the question of who gets access to such intelligence has become critical. OpenAI says its latest moves are designed to ensure AI expands opportunity rather than reinforcing existing divides.
OpenAI has steadily worked to make ChatGPT accessible through a free version and a low-cost subscription model. Since August, its ChatGPT Go plan has launched in 171 countries, offering enhanced features at a modest price. The company has now expanded ChatGPT Go to the United States and all regions where ChatGPT is available, pricing it at $8 per month. The plan includes expanded messaging limits, image creation, file uploads, and memory features.
Alongside this expansion, OpenAI announced that it plans to begin testing advertising in the United States in the coming weeks. The ads will appear only on the free and Go tiers, while Pro, Business, and Enterprise users will continue to have a completely ad-free experience. According to the company, advertising is intended to reduce usage limits for free users and keep advanced AI tools affordable without forcing everyone into paid plans.
Safeguards Around Trust and Privacy
OpenAI emphasized that introducing advertising will not compromise user trust. ChatGPT is widely used for personal, educational, and professional tasks, making privacy and neutrality essential. The company stated that advertisements will never influence ChatGPT’s answers, which will remain based solely on what is most useful and relevant to users.
In addition, OpenAI reiterated that user conversations are private and will not be shared with or sold to advertisers. Ads will be clearly labeled and kept separate from AI-generated responses. Users will also have control over their experience, including the ability to turn off ad personalization, clear ad-related data, and opt for paid tiers that remove ads entirely.
The company also noted that it does not optimize ChatGPT for time spent or engagement, a common practice in digital advertising. Instead, it prioritizes long-term user trust and experience over short-term revenue growth.
How Ads Will Appear
During the initial testing phase, ads will be shown only to logged-in adults in the U.S. using the free or Go plans. OpenAI plans to place ads at the bottom of responses when a sponsored product or service is relevant to the conversation. Users will be able to see why a particular ad is shown, dismiss ads, and provide feedback.
Importantly, OpenAI said ads will not appear for users under 18 and will be excluded from sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health, and politics.
New Opportunities for Businesses
OpenAI believes advertising within ChatGPT could also benefit small businesses and emerging brands. By using AI-driven conversational formats, advertisers may be able to offer more informative and interactive experiences than traditional digital ads. In the future, users may be able to ask follow-up questions directly within an ad to help make purchase decisions.
The company said it will refine its approach based on user feedback but remains firm on its core principles. OpenAI maintains that its long-term focus is on building products that users and businesses find valuable enough to pay for, supported by a diverse revenue model in which advertising plays a limited but strategic role.
As testing begins in the coming months, OpenAI says it will closely monitor feedback to ensure advertising supports wider access to AI while preserving the trust that has made ChatGPT one of the world’s most widely used AI tools.
