Seven & i, PayPay to Merge Loyalty Programs, Creating 100 Million-Member Customer Database: Japanese retail giant Seven & i Holdings and digital payments leader PayPay are set to combine their customer ID and loyalty platforms, creating a unified customer ecosystem of more than 100 million members in one of the most significant loyalty and data partnerships in Asia’s retail sector.

According to reports, the companies are in the final stages of negotiations to integrate Seven & i’s 7iD membership platform with PayPay’s digital payment ecosystem, enabling both organizations to share customer insights, expand rewards programmes, and deliver more personalized shopping experiences.

The proposed alliance would combine PayPay’s approximately 74 million users with Seven & i’s nearly 39 million registered 7iD members, creating one of Japan’s largest consumer databases and significantly strengthening both companies’ ability to compete in the rapidly evolving retail and digital payments landscape.
A New Era of Data-Driven Loyalty
Industry analysts view the partnership as a major step toward building an integrated retail ecosystem where digital payments, customer identity, and loyalty rewards work seamlessly across multiple touchpoints.
Customers are expected to enjoy enhanced rewards, more relevant offers, and a smoother omnichannel shopping experience, while both companies gain access to richer consumer insights that can improve marketing effectiveness, customer retention, and personalised engagement.
The move reflects a growing global trend in which retailers and fintech companies are leveraging first-party customer data to create unified loyalty ecosystems that strengthen customer relationships while reducing dependence on third-party advertising platforms.
Part of a Broader Strategic Alliance
The loyalty programme integration is expected to accompany a broader capital alliance between the companies.
Reports indicate that SoftBank and PayPay each plan to invest approximately ¥100 billion (around US$613 million) in Seven & i Holdings, reinforcing the strategic partnership beyond payments and loyalty. While the companies have yet to officially announce the agreement, industry observers expect further details in the coming weeks.
Redefining Retail Engagement
For Seven & i, the owner of the globally recognised 7-Eleven convenience store chain, the partnership represents an opportunity to deepen customer engagement through personalised promotions, cross-channel rewards, and digital commerce.
For PayPay, Japan’s leading mobile payment platform, integrating retail loyalty with payment services increases customer stickiness, encourages repeat purchases, and expands opportunities for data-driven marketing.
A Growing Global Trend
The proposed merger highlights how retailers worldwide are increasingly combining payments, loyalty programmes, customer identity, and analytics into unified ecosystems that enhance customer lifetime value.
As competition intensifies across retail and digital commerce, companies are shifting from standalone loyalty schemes to integrated platforms that connect every customer interaction—from payment and shopping to personalised offers and rewards.
If finalised, the Seven & i–PayPay partnership will represent one of Asia’s largest customer loyalty integrations, setting a new benchmark for retail innovation, customer engagement, and data-powered marketing.
