Threads Overtakes X in Mobile Daily Active Users: Meta-owned social platform Threads has officially overtaken Elon Musk’s X in daily active users on mobile devices, marking a significant shift in how audiences are engaging with competing social networks. New data from market intelligence firm Similarweb highlights a steady and sustained rise in Threads’ mobile usage over recent months.
According to Similarweb, Threads recorded 141.5 million daily active users across iOS and Android as of January 7, 2026. In comparison, X registered 125 million daily active users on mobile during the same period. This milestone reflects changing user preferences, with mobile-first engagement increasingly favouring Meta’s newer platform.
While X continues to hold an advantage on the web, Threads has consistently strengthened its position on mobile. Similarweb data indicates that the Threads app has experienced continuous growth, gradually narrowing—and now surpassing—the gap with X in daily mobile usage.
Meta has repeatedly underscored Threads’ broader growth trajectory. In August 2025, the company announced that Threads had crossed 400 million monthly active users globally. Two months later, Meta reported that the platform had reached 150 million daily active users, reinforcing confidence in its long-term expansion strategy.
Similarweb noted that this momentum did not emerge overnight. During the summer of 2025, the firm reported that Threads was rapidly closing in on X after posting an impressive 127.8 percent year-on-year growth in mobile usage by late June. Since then, daily engagement on Threads has continued to climb steadily.
However, X remains dominant in web-based usage. Similarweb data shows that X maintains a relatively stable web audience of around 150 million daily visits. As of January 13, X recorded 145.4 million daily web visits, far outpacing Threads’ 8.5 million daily web visits across Threads.com and Threads.net combined.
These contrasting figures underline a clear divergence in usage patterns. Threads is emerging as a mobile-centric platform with accelerating daily engagement, while X continues to rely heavily on its established web audience. As competition intensifies in the social media landscape, the battle between Threads and X increasingly reflects how—and where—users choose to connect online.
